New Postal Law ‘Post Office Act 2023’ Comes Into Effect, Enhancing Ease Of Living
The central government has issued a notification giving effect to the provisions of the new postal law, the Post Office Act, 2023, from June 18. According to a Ministry of Communications release, “The Post Office Act, 2023,” vide notification dated June 17, 2024, comes into force with effect from June 18, 2024, and repeals the Indian Post Office Act, 1898.” “The Post Office Bill, 2023” was introduced in Rajya Sabha on August 10, 2023, and passed in Rajya Sabha on December 4, 2023. The bill was then considered and passed by the Lok Sabha on December 12 and 18, 2023. The Act received the assent of the President of India on December 24, 2023, and was published in the Gazette of India, Extraordinary, Part II, Section 1, dated December 24, 2023, by the Ministry of Law & Justice (Legislative Department) for general information. The Act aims to create a simple legislative framework, for the delivery of citizen-centric services and the benefits of government schemes up to the last mile, enhancing ease of living. The exclusive privilege of collecting, processing, and delivering of letters granted to the Post Office previously, has been discontinued. In order to promote “maximum governance and minimum government,” no penal provisions have been prescribed in the Post Office Act, 2023, which comes into force today. The newly enacted postal law provides a framework for prescribing standards for the addressing of items, address identifiers, and usage of postcodes. PM Modi Arrives In Mysuru, Received By Karnataka CM Shivakumar Ahead Of Viveka Smaraka Inauguration PM Modi Arrives in Mysuru, Received by Karnataka CM Shivakumar Ahead of Viveka Smaraka Inauguration Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Mysuru on Saturday to inaugurate the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Youth Centre (Viveka Smaraka) at the Ramakrishna Ashrama, where he was received by Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot. The Chief Minister welcomed the Prime Minister at the Mysuru helipad by presenting him with a shawl and a bouquet before the two leaders proceeded to the inauguration venue. The Prime Minister is scheduled to inaugurate the Viveka Smaraka, a memorial established to commemorate Swami Vivekananda’s historic visit to Mysuru in 1892 during his journey across India, prior to his landmark address at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago in 1893. Following the inauguration, PM Modi will visit the Ramakrishna Ashrama School before departing for New Delhi from Mysuru Airport on a special aircraft. Ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit, Mysuru was placed under extensive security cover, with authorities enforcing stringent security measures and traffic restrictions across the city. More than 1,000 police personnel have been deployed under the supervision of South Zone Inspector General of Police M.B. Boralingaiah. The security arrangement includes one Superintendent of Police, one Police Commissioner, four Additional Superintendents of Police, 18 Police Inspectors, 40 Sub-Inspectors, 550 male police personnel, 350 women police personnel and 250 Home Guards. Security has been intensified around the Ramakrishna Ashrama, Oval Grounds, Mysuru Airport, and along the Prime Minister’s convoy route. Authorities have also restricted traffic on 12 major roads in the city to facilitate VVIP movement and ensure security during the visit.
