Jammu :As the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir braces for the upcoming assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set for a significant reshuffle, including the appointment of a new party president for the region. Party insiders have confirmed that preparations are in full swing, with high-level deliberations underway to strategically position the party for the yet-to-be-announced elections.
Party sources revealed, “The preparations for the assembly elections are in full swing, with party-level deliberations being held with the high command. A reshuffle in the BJP organization is on the cards, including the appointment of a new J&K head.” This impending change is part of the BJP’s broader strategy to strengthen its foothold in Jammu and Kashmir, a region of significant political importance.
The discussions at the top echelons of the party have been intense, with various names being considered for key positions. “Discussions at the top level are in progress with the J&K cadre, and various names for different posts are in the pipeline with additional and new responsibilities,” the sources stated. This indicates a comprehensive evaluation of the party’s existing leadership and the potential infusion of fresh faces to revitalize the party’s presence in the region.
In a pivotal meeting held on July 4 in the national capital, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP National President, and Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda emphasized the need for the J&K unit to gear up for the impending assembly elections. “The names of senior leaders comprising former MLAs, Member Parliaments, and ex-J&K BJP heads are included in the list,” sources added, highlighting the inclusion of seasoned politicians in the strategy discussions. Notably, the three-time Member of Parliament, Jugal Kishore Sharma, has emerged as the frontrunner for the J&K BJP president post.
Jugal Kishore Sharma, who previously served as the BJP president of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir from 2012 to 2015, is seen as a strong contender. “Jugal Kishore Sharma, who scored a hat-trick in the Lok Sabha elections, is considered to be the strongest contender for the presidential chair,” the sources elaborated. Despite his impressive political track record, Sharma was not accommodated in the current Modi cabinet, making him a prime candidate for the J&K BJP chief role, potentially replacing Ravinder Raina, who has been the president since 2018.
The recent Lok Sabha elections saw the BJP retain two seats in Jammu and Kashmir, though the party’s vote share experienced a notable decline. “In the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, the BJP retained two seats in Jammu and Kashmir, but its vote share significantly decreased,” the sources observed. This decline underscores the necessity for a strategic overhaul to regain the party’s lost ground in the region.
There is a strong sentiment within the party that rejuvenating the leadership with fresh faces, guided by experienced leaders, is crucial for the upcoming elections. “Shouldering responsibilities on new faces in Assembly Elections under the guidance of experienced leadership must be given due consideration by the party high command to revive the party in Jammu and Kashmir,” the insiders suggested.
The history of BJP’s leadership in Jammu and Kashmir includes notable figures such as
Thakur Baldev Singh (1980-1989)
Prof. Chamanlal Gupta (1989-1994)
Vaid Vishnudutt (1994-1996)
Dayakrishna Kotwal (1996-2002)
Dr. Nirmal Singh (2002-2006)
Ashok Khajuria (2006-2010)
Shamsher Singh Manhas (2010-2012)
Jugal Kishore Sharma (2012-2015)
Sat Sharma (2015-2018)
Ravinder Raina (from 2018 till date).
“This year (2024) is the organizational restructuring year, and the election for the post of president was scheduled to be held in 2023 itself, but due to the Lok Sabha elections, the process was delayed. A new organizational structure in J&K will soon be constituted and announced by the party high command,” the sources concluded.
As the BJP gears up for a significant electoral battle in Jammu and Kashmir, the impending leadership changes and strategic preparations underscore the party’s determination to solidify its influence in the region. With Jugal Kishore Sharma at the forefront, the BJP aims to navigate the complex political terrain of J&K and emerge victorious in the upcoming assembly elections.
