Srinagar/Jammu : As the Jammu and Kashmir government prepares to present the Budget for 2025, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has raised concerns over alleged economic and developmental disparities between the Jammu and Kashmir regions. BJP’s Jammu & Kashmir Spokesperson, Ankur Sharma, has called on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to ensure a fair and balanced budget that addresses long-standing grievances and fulfills the commitments made in the government’s manifesto.
Regional Disparities and Resource Allocation:
Sharma criticized previous National Conference (NC)-led governments for what he described as an uneven distribution of resources, alleging that Jammu has been consistently sidelined in terms of infrastructure projects, employment opportunities, and government funding. He insisted that the upcoming budget must rectify these imbalances by ensuring transparency in fund allocation and equitable growth across both regions.
“In the past, Jammu has been neglected in key developmental projects while Kashmir has received disproportionate financial attention. The government must now ensure that the upcoming budget corrects these historical wrongs and treats both regions fairly,” Sharma stated.
Regularization of Government Workers:
A major demand from BJP is the regularization of daily wage, contractual, and ad-hoc workers, who, according to Sharma, have been struggling with job insecurity and delayed salaries.
“These workers form the backbone of various government departments. The government must fulfill its promise of regularizing them and providing them with dignified livelihoods,” he asserted. The demand is in line with the commitments made in the government’s election manifesto, which included assurances for job security and timely wage disbursement.
Addressing Unemployment and Economic Growth:
The BJP spokesperson also emphasized the need for a strong policy framework to address rising unemployment in Jammu & Kashmir. He urged the government to introduce initiatives that boost private sector investments, skill development programs, and employment drives to prevent the migration of young professionals in search of better opportunities.
“The youth of Jammu & Kashmir have high expectations from this budget. The government must prioritize job creation through industrial growth, infrastructure development, and direct employment policies,” Sharma said.
Political Fallout: BJP Threatens Agitation if Demands Are Ignored:
Sharma issued a warning that if the government fails to present a fair budget addressing these concerns, BJP will not hesitate to launch an agitation to demand justice for Jammu and equitable development for the entire Union Territory.
“The BJP will not allow any biased allocation of funds that sidelines Jammu. If the government does not act on these concerns, we will take to the streets,” he declared.
Conclusion: A Crucial Test for the Omar Abdullah Government:
With mounting political pressure and growing public discontent over regional disparities, the upcoming budget session will be a crucial test for Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s leadership. The government’s response to BJP’s demands will likely shape the political narrative in J&K in the months ahead. Whether the budget succeeds in addressing these issues or sparks further political tensions remains to be seen.
