Jammu : The Jammu and Kashmir Police are engaged in a dual battle on the frontlines of counterterrorism. While they confront armed terrorists, they are simultaneously combating a subtler yet equally insidious enemy: the barrage of false narratives propagated by thousands of fake social media accounts.
These accounts, numbering around 8,000, are rife on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Operated by handlers outside the country, they aim to spread vicious propaganda, incite chaos, and glorify terrorism. The goal is clear: to create confusion and instability in the region, luring innocent youth into the clutches of terror groups.
Director General of Police (DGP) R R Swain has previously acknowledged the severity of this threat. “Social media accounts are peddling false narratives to incite violence and lure innocent youth to join terror groups,” Swain admitted, highlighting the persistent challenge faced by the police force.
The Central Government has taken significant steps to curb this menace. In 2023, it blocked 14 messenger mobile applications used by terrorists in Pakistan to communicate with their supporters and on-ground workers (OGWs) in Jammu and Kashmir. These applications, designed to maintain user anonymity, made it difficult to trace the entities behind them. By transmitting anti-India messages and furthering terror activities, these apps posed a grave threat to national security.
Upon receiving intelligence that these applications were being used to spread terror propaganda and incite youth in Jammu and Kashmir, the Ministry of Home Affairs, in close coordination with the IT Ministry and other concerned agencies, swiftly blocked them under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police’s efforts to distinguish between genuine and fake social media accounts are crucial in this fight. By taking legal action against these malicious accounts, they strive to prevent the spread of misinformation and the glorification of terrorism. This ongoing digital battle underscores the complexity of modern counterterrorism efforts, where the war is not only fought with guns and bullets but also with information and misinformation.
The dedication of the Jammu and Kashmir Police in this regard is commendable. Their relentless pursuit to protect the region from both physical and digital threats demonstrates a comprehensive approach to ensuring security and stability. They are not just fighting armed terrorists; they are also standing guard against the pervasive influence of false narratives designed to disrupt peace and incite violence.
In a landscape where social media can be weaponized, the role of the Jammu and Kashmir Police becomes even more critical. Their vigilance and proactive measures are pivotal in countering the dual threats of terrorism and propaganda. By unmasking the invisible foes behind fake social media accounts and disrupting their networks, the police force is ensuring that the truth prevails and that peace can be maintained in the region.
The story of the Jammu and Kashmir Police is one of resilience and determination, embodying the spirit of service and sacrifice. Their fight against terrorism, both on the ground and in the digital realm, stands as a testament to their unwavering commitment to safeguarding the people and preserving the integrity of the nation.
