New Delhi: As the Indian Air Force (IAF) navigates through a transformative era of modernization and regional security challenges, Air Marshal Amar Preet Singh, a distinguished fighter pilot and strategist with over 5,000 flying hours, will assume command as the new Chief of the Air Staff on September 30, following the retirement of Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari.
In an official announcement, the Ministry of Defence stated, “The government has appointed Air Marshal Amar Preet Singh, PVSM, AVSM, presently serving as Vice Chief of the Air Staff, as the next Chief of the Air Staff, in the rank of Air Chief Marshal, with effect from the afternoon of September 30.” This appointment marks a new chapter for the IAF as it gears up to meet both internal challenges and external threats in an increasingly volatile regional security environment.
A Career Forged in the Skies:
Born on October 27, 1964, Air Marshal Singh embarked on his illustrious career when he was commissioned into the fighter pilot stream of the Indian Air Force in December 1984. Over nearly four decades of service, he has demonstrated exceptional leadership, technical prowess, and operational acumen. He is an alumnus of the prestigious National Defence Academy, Defence Services Staff College, and National Defence College, with expertise in flying a wide array of fixed and rotary-wing aircraft.
A qualified flying instructor and experimental test pilot, Air Marshal Singh’s career is marked by significant milestones. Among his notable accomplishments, he commanded an operational fighter squadron and a frontline air base, affirming his leadership in high-stakes operational environments. As a test pilot, he spearheaded the MiG-29 upgrade project management team in Moscow and later led the flight testing of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas at the National Flight Test Centre. His role in advancing India’s indigenous fighter capabilities underlines his dedication to bolstering the nation’s aerospace power.
Shaping the Future of the IAF:
As he takes the reins of the IAF, Air Marshal Singh’s focus is expected to be twofold: advancing the modernization of India’s air power and addressing pressing concerns along the nation’s borders, particularly the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. The Air Marshal will oversee critical procurements of new fighter fleets as the IAF grapples with a dwindling number of squadrons—now standing at 30, significantly below the sanctioned strength of 42 squadrons.
In his recent address to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and other stakeholders, Air Marshal Singh made a bold statement, calling for greater efficiency in delivering defence systems. “Self-reliance in defence cannot be at the cost of national security,” he remarked, signaling his no-compromise stance on maintaining the IAF’s operational readiness.
His involvement in major international exercises, including the IAF-hosted ‘Tarang Shakti’ wargames, further highlights his vision for strengthening India’s strategic partnerships and air combat capabilities. Known for his strategic acumen, Air Marshal Singh is expected to lead with a balanced focus on domestic defence advancements and international cooperation.
A Legacy of Leadership and Valor:
Air Marshal Singh has held a variety of command and staff positions that showcase his broad expertise and adaptability. He served as the Air Defence Commander at the South Western Air Command and as the Senior Air Staff Officer at the Eastern Air Command. His leadership was further tested and proven when he was appointed as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Air Command, before ascending to the role of Vice Chief of the Air Staff in February 2023.
In recognition of his outstanding service, Air Marshal Singh has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), honors that underscore his contributions to the IAF and the nation.
Challenges Ahead:
As the new Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Singh is stepping into one of the most critical periods for India’s defence forces. With the geopolitical landscape around India becoming increasingly complex—driven by China’s growing assertiveness and the enduring threat from Pakistan—Air Marshal Singh’s expertise will be pivotal in ensuring the IAF’s preparedness.
India’s air power capabilities will be tested, not just in terms of technology but in maintaining operational superiority in a region fraught with tensions. His legacy as a fine strategist and a warrior who has spent decades shaping the IAF’s future will be called upon to navigate these challenges.
As the Air Marshal takes charge, all eyes will be on his ability to steer the force towards achieving its full potential. With a clear mandate for modernization, procurement, and strategic deterrence, his leadership promises to define the next era of the Indian Air Force.
