In a significant breakthrough, the Kishtwar Police, led by SHO Police Station Chatroo Vikram Bandhral the supervision of SSP Kishtwar, successfully arrested Abdul Gani, an absconder and surrendered terrorist. Gani, son of Abdul Satar Chopan, a resident of Sigdi Markhal, Chatroo, had been on the run for 20 years. He was wanted in connection with an FIR filed in 2003 (FIR No. 24/2003) under Sections 302 and 307 of the RPC (Ranbir Penal Code) and the Arms Act (7/27 Arms Act).
The warrant for his arrest was issued in 2004 by the Sub Judge Judicial Magistrate Court in Kishtwar under Section 512 of the CrPC, which is used to declare a person as a proclaimed offender when they evade arrest for an extended period. Gani had been hiding in various locations for two decades, managing to evade law enforcement. His apprehension marks the culmination of an extended manhunt.
The case against Gani stems from his alleged involvement in terrorist activities, particularly the murder and attempted murder charges in the early 2000s, during a period when Kishtwar district was heavily impacted by militancy. His arrest is seen as a significant victory for the local authorities, as they continue to crack down on absconders and former militants who have avoided prosecution for years.
This operation highlights the persistent efforts of the police to bring long-absconding criminals to justice. The arrest of Abdul Gani underscores the effectiveness of the coordination between law enforcement agencies in tracking down those involved in serious crimes, even after extended periods of hiding. The case will now proceed as Gani faces the charges in court after evading justice for over two decades.
