SRINAGAR: National Conference (NC) leaders, Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah, have welcomed the Election Commission’s announcement to conduct Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, scheduled in three phases. This announcement marks a significant step towards restoring political representation in the Union Territory.
Farooq Abdullah’s Hope for Democratic Restoration:
Farooq Abdullah expressed hope that the announcement signals the end of central rule imposed since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. He underscored the importance of re-establishing a democratic process in Jammu and Kashmir, which he believes will address the political vacuum created by the central administration’s extended control.
Omar Abdullah’s Reaction and Concerns:
Omar Abdullah, the NC vice-president, welcomed the announcement but criticized the timing, stating it was “better late than never.” He pointed out that this is the first time since the 1987-88 elections that polls are being conducted in a relatively condensed schedule, describing it as a novel approach for the region’s political landscape.
Abdullah raised concerns about recent transfers in the police and civil administration, suggesting they could be aimed at benefiting the BJP. He urged the Election Commission to review these changes and ensure that they comply with guidelines designed to maintain a fair electoral environment. Abdullah emphasized the need for the Election Commission to prevent any measures that could undermine a balanced playing field.
Internal Party Dynamics and Election Strategy:
Regarding his potential candidacy, Omar Abdullah revealed internal party discussions about whether he should contest the elections. Despite his initial reluctance to run while Jammu and Kashmir remains a Union Territory, Abdullah acknowledged mounting pressure from party members. He indicated that he would confer with his father and party colleagues before making a final decision, especially given Farooq Abdullah’s declining health.
Prospects for Alliances:
Omar Abdullah also addressed the potential for alliances with other political parties. While acknowledging discussions with Congress leaders, he noted that these talks had not progressed due to a lack of clear instructions from the Congress high command. Abdullah expressed openness to further dialogue if Congress provides actionable proposals.
In contrast, he expressed skepticism about forming alliances with parties like the PDP, citing deteriorated relations and past electoral rivalries. The NC’s strategy for forming alliances will be influenced by the evolving political landscape as the elections approach.
Security and Fairness of Elections:
Omar Abdullah called for urgent measures to address security concerns for politicians in the region. He highlighted the need for the Election Commission to restore security for those whose protection had been downgraded or removed. Ensuring a secure environment for all candidates is crucial for conducting free and fair elections, according to Abdullah.
Overall, the Abdullahs’ response to the Election Commission’s announcement reflects a mix of cautious optimism and concern over the fairness of the electoral process and the political dynamics in Jammu and Kashmir.
