On August 9th, 2024, the Department of Sociology at Eliezer Joldan Memorial College hosted a meaningful celebration of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People, drawing in a large gathering of students and faculty members.

The event kicked off with an engaging presentation by Dr. Stanzin Namgail, Assistant Professor, who explored the history of this important day. He highlighted the critical issues facing indigenous communities globally, with a special focus on the unique cultural heritage of Ladakh’s indigenous people. Dr. Namgail urged the youth to honor and preserve their ancestral traditions, stressing the importance of safeguarding their cultural identity in the face of modern challenges.

The program continued with a screening of the documentary ‘Ancient Future: Learning from Ladakh’ by Helena Norberg-Hodge. The film offered a powerful contrast between Ladakh’s traditional way of life and the changes brought by modernization, helping students connect more deeply with their heritage.

During the interactive Q&A session, Assistant Professor Jigmat Sangyas shared his insights on the film, and Rigzin Nurbu, a first-semester student, performed a Ladakhi song that underscored the significance of preserving traditional culture.

The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Assistant Professor Dr. Tashi Lundup, who expressed appreciation to all participants for their active involvement, ensuring the success of this important celebration
