Troops Withdrawn from Manipur to Strengthen Security in Terror-Wracked Districts of Poonch, Rajouri, Kathua, and Doda

JAMMU&KASHMIR: In response to escalating terrorist activities in the Jammu region, close to 1,500 troops from the Assam Rifles will be deployed in the districts of Poonch, Rajouri, Kathua, and Doda. This unprecedented move comes as part of a strategic shift to enhance security in these terror-affected areas. For the first time, the Assam Rifles, traditionally operating in the Northeast, will establish a base in Jammu, signifying the severity of the situation.

Recent Terror Attacks:

Poonch: In recent months, Poonch has witnessed a surge in terror-related incidents. Militants have targeted security forces and civilians alike, resulting in several casualties. The dense forests and difficult terrain provide cover for terrorist infiltration from across the border, necessitating robust counter-insurgency measures. A recent ambush on a military convoy left multiple soldiers injured and two dead, highlighting the increasing boldness of the militants in the area.

Rajouri:Rajouri has also seen an increase in terror attacks, particularly targeting army camps and patrol units. The porous borders and local support networks have enabled terrorists to carry out coordinated strikes, leading to heightened security alerts and operations. In one of the most severe attacks, terrorists infiltrated an army camp, resulting in a prolonged gunfight that claimed the lives of several soldiers and terrorists.

Kathua:Kathua, which shares borders with Punjab, has reported incidents of cross-border smuggling of arms and ammunition, further fueling terrorism in the region. The recent attacks have underscored the need for stringent border management and increased patrolling to thwart terrorist movements. In a notable incident, security forces intercepted a large cache of weapons, preventing a potential large-scale attack.

Doda:Doda, with its complex terrain and history of militancy, has experienced renewed terror activities. Recent encounters between security forces and terrorists have highlighted the persistent threat in the area, demanding sustained military presence and vigilance. A recent encounter resulted in the neutralization of three terrorists, but also highlighted the ongoing challenge of insurgent activities in the region.

Strategic Deployment of Assam Rifles:

For the first time, the Assam Rifles will operate outside its core area of the Northeast, marking a significant shift in India’s counter-terrorism strategy. Two CRPF battalions will be stationed in Churachandpur, ensuring that security and stability are maintained in the Northeast while Assam Rifles troops are reallocated to Jammu.

The transition involves a detailed handover process, where the Assam Rifles will transfer control of their operational bases, intelligence networks, and ongoing missions to the CRPF.
