Srinagar: In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the nation mourns the loss of brave soldiers and civilians following a series of terrorist attacks in the Jammu region. The latest tragedy struck on July 15, when four army personnel, including an officer, were killed in a gunfight with terrorists in Doda district. This attack is part of a disturbing pattern of violence that has plagued the region since the beginning of the year.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed his deep anguish over the incident. In a poignant message posted on X, he stated, “I am deeply anguished to learn about the cowardly attack on our Army soldiers and JKP personnel in Doda district. Tributes to brave soldiers who made supreme sacrifice protecting our nation. My deepest condolences to members of the bereaved families. We will avenge death of our soldiers & thwart the evil designs of terrorists and their associates. I call upon the people to unite in the fight against terrorism & provide us accurate information so that we can intensify anti-terror operations & neutralize the terror ecosystem.”

Among those who made the ultimate sacrifice was Captain Brijesh Thapa, whose bravery and dedication have left an indelible mark on his family and the nation. His father, Colonel Bhuwanesh Thapa (retd), spoke with a mixture of pride and sorrow about his son’s legacy. “I could not believe when I was informed that he was no more. He always wanted to be in the Indian Army, right from his childhood. He used to wear my Army dress and roam around. Even after he had done his engineering, he still wanted to go to the Army. He cleared the exam in one go and was admitted into the Army. I feel proud that my son has done something for the nation and for the security of the nation. The only sad part is we won’t be able to meet him again; otherwise, I am happy that he sacrificed his life for his country.”

Captain Thapa’s mother, Nilima Thapa, also shared her grief and pride, stating, “He won’t return to us. At 11 pm, we received the news. He was a very decent guy. He always wanted to join the Army. We used to tell him that life in the Army is tough. I am very proud of my son who sacrificed his life for the country. The government will take action. Unfortunately, we lost our son.”

A Surge in Terror Attacks: Chronology of Tragedy:

The Jammu region has witnessed a significant increase in terror incidents, particularly in border districts, resulting in the loss of numerous lives and injuries. Since January 1, twelve security personnel, including an Army captain, and ten civilians have died in terror attacks, while fifty-five people have been injured and five terrorists killed.

July 2024:

July 15 : Four army personnel, including an officer, killed in a gunfight with terrorists in Doda district.

July 8: Five army personnel killed and as many injured in a terrorist ambush in Kathua district.

July 7: An army personnel injured in a terrorist attack on a security post in Rajouri district.

June 2024:

June 26: Three foreign terrorists killed in a gunfight in Doda district.

June 12: A policeman injured in a terrorist attack in Doda district.

June 11/12: Two foreign terrorists and a CRPF jawan killed in a gunfight in Kathua district. Five Rashtriya Rifles personnel and a Special Police Officer injured in a terrorist attack in Doda district.

June 9: Nine pilgrims killed and forty-two injured in a terrorist attack on a bus in Reasi district.

May 2024:

May 4: One IAF personnel killed and five injured in a terrorist attack in Poonch district.

April 2024:

April 28: A village defence guard killed in an encounter with terrorists in Udhampur district.

April 22: A government employee shot dead by terrorists in Rajouri district.

A Call to Action:The recent surge in terrorist activities has prompted a strong response from both the government and the public. Lieutenant Governor Sinha’s call for unity and vigilance underscores the need for a collective effort to combat terrorism. “We will avenge the death of our soldiers & thwart the evil designs of terrorists and their associates,” he declared, urging citizens to provide accurate information to aid anti-terror operations.
