Jammu: As the annual Amarnath Yatra approaches, a formidable three-tier security system has been meticulously implemented at the Jammu base camp to ensure the safety of thousands of pilgrims. The Jammu and Kashmir Police’s security wing has taken charge, executing comprehensive search and sanitization operations ahead of the yatra’s commencement on June 28.
A Sanctuary of Security…
The 52-day pilgrimage to the sacred Amarnath cave shrine, perched at an elevation of 3,880 meters, will kick off on June 29. Pilgrims will traverse either the traditional 48-kilometer Nunwan-Pahalgam route in Anantnag or the more challenging 14-kilometer Baltal route in Ganderbal. In preparation, Dr. Vinod Kumar, Jammu’s Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), has confirmed that robust security measures are in place at the Bhagwati Nagar base camp, which serves as the principal lodging and registration hub for pilgrims in Jammu City.
Fortress Jammu: Securing the Pilgrimage Path…
In a bid to preempt any security threats, the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, a critical artery for the yatra, has been fortified. The highway, dotted with high-end CCTV cameras and Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs), is under stringent surveillance. High-rise buildings along the route have been commandeered to provide vantage points for security personnel, ensuring that every inch of the highway is under constant watch.
Eyes in the Sky: Advanced Surveillance Technology…
A network of sophisticated body scanners and 360-degree CCTV cameras has been deployed at the base camp and along the highway. The traffic department has installed 10 high-end CCTV cameras from Udhampur to Banihal in Ramban district. In tandem, the police have positioned 60 additional cameras to monitor vehicular movement and identify any suspicious activity. SSP Traffic National Highway, Rohit Baskotra, emphasized that these cameras are strategically located in high-risk areas prone to accidents and traffic congestion.
Coordinated Command: The Nerve Center of Operations…
A dedicated control room has been established in Ramban to oversee traffic and security operations around the clock. This command center plays a pivotal role in managing traffic flow, mitigating congestion, and responding swiftly to any emergencies that arise during the yatra. “With the control room, our response time to traffic jams or vehicle breakdowns is significantly improved,” Baskotra noted.
On the Ground: Vigilance and Preparedness…
In addition to the technological enhancements, several companies of paramilitary forces are being deployed along the pilgrimage routes. This manpower, combined with the technological infrastructure, creates a formidable security presence aimed at ensuring an incident-free yatra. The security wing has also restricted public access to the base camp area to maintain a controlled environment.
Traffic Advisory and Pilgrim Safety…
The traffic police have issued an advisory to drivers navigating the Jammu-Srinagar highway during the yatra, stressing the importance of lane discipline and warning of hefty fines for violations. Contact numbers for technical support have been provided to assist pilgrims in case of vehicle breakdowns, further underscoring the comprehensive preparations made for this year’s pilgrimage.
A Seamless Journey: Ensuring Smooth Pilgrimage Flow…
Special efforts by the traffic police in Ramban and Udhampur aim to facilitate uninterrupted traffic flow on the national highway, a task that is particularly challenging during the pilgrimage period. These measures reflect a coordinated effort to manage the influx of pilgrims and ensure their journey is safe and smooth.
As the Amarnath Yatra begins, the convergence of advanced technology, robust security measures, and meticulous planning stands as a testament to the commitment of the Jammu and Kashmir authorities. The unwavering vigilance ensures that the sacred journey to the Amarnath cave shrine remains a safe and serene experience for all pilgrims.
