“Jammu and Kashmir’s Push for Power Sector Rejuvenation: RDSS Aims to Slash Distribution Losses”
In a concerted effort to revamp the power distribution sector in Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo spearheaded a pivotal meeting of the Distribution Reforms Committee. The focal point of discussion was the implementation of the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), designed to expedite the reduction of distribution losses and enhance the quality, reliability, and affordability of power supply across the region.
The RDSS sets an ambitious target of mitigating Actual Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses from the staggering rate of 60% to a significantly lower range of 12-15%. This transformative initiative underscores the government’s commitment to modernize infrastructure and streamline operations to meet the burgeoning energy demands of the populace.
At the core of the scheme lie comprehensive measures aimed at leveraging cutting-edge technology and strategic interventions to achieve tangible outcomes. Foremost among these measures is the widespread deployment of smart metering solutions, which are poised to usher in a new era of efficiency and accountability in power consumption monitoring. A staggering total of 14,07,045 smart meters and 88,037 system meters are slated for installation, with a clear emphasis on expeditious execution by designated project implementing agencies.
During the committee meeting, deliberations encompassed a spectrum of critical aspects, including the progress of smart metering works, strategies for loss reduction, and avenues for securing requisite funding from the Government of India. Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo underscored the paramount importance of adhering to stringent timelines and ensuring the timely completion of designated tasks. Emphasizing the pivotal role of efficient power distribution in fostering socio-economic development, he reiterated the imperative of concerted efforts to realize the envisaged targets within stipulated deadlines.
The significance of the RDSS transcends mere infrastructural overhaul; it embodies a paradigm shift towards a more sustainable and resilient power ecosystem. By curbing distribution losses and bolstering operational efficiencies, the scheme is poised to unlock a myriad of socio-economic dividends, catalyzing growth and prosperity across Jammu and Kashmir.
