In a tense and dramatic turn of events, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Kathua narrowly escaped a militant ambush during an ongoing anti-militant operation in Hiranagar. The incident, which occurred amid heightened security measures, has led to significant discoveries of arms and ammunition, heightening concerns over militant activities in the region.
Ambush in Hiranagar: A Narrow Escape…
According to official sources, the convoy of the DIG and SSP came under heavy fire as a militant, concealed in the area, unleashed a barrage of over two dozen bullets on their vehicles. Miraculously, none of the officers or their accompanying personnel were harmed in the attack. The assailant’s sudden and fierce assault has underscored the persistent threats faced by security forces operating in Jammu and Kashmir.
Arms and Ammunition Seized…
In the aftermath of the ambush, security forces intensified their search operations around the gunfight site. The meticulous combing operation led to the recovery of a significant cache of arms, ammunition, and other incriminating items. The haul included:
– Three magazines containing 30 rounds each
– An additional magazine with 24 rounds
– 75 rounds stored in a separate polythene bag
– Three live grenades
– INR 1 lakh in cash (comprising 200 notes of INR 500 each)
– Eatables such as Pakistani-made chocolates, dry channa, and stale chapatis
– Pakistani-made medicines and painkiller injections
– One syringe
– Two packs of A4 batteries
– One handset, wrapped in tape with an antenna and two wires hanging from it
These findings suggest a well-prepared militant presence and hint at the logistical support possibly crossing borders, raising alarms about the sophistication and external backing of militant operatives in the region.
Traffic Disruptions Amid Security Concerns…
In a related development, a joint camp of security forces in the Chattergala area of Bhaderwah also came under militant attack. In response to this heightened militant activity, authorities have suspended traffic movement on the Bhaderwah-Pathankot Highway until further notice. This precautionary measure aims to ensure the safety of civilians and security personnel while operations to neutralize militant threats continue.
Rising Tensions and Security Measures…
The twin incidents in Hiranagar and Chattergala highlight the ongoing challenges faced by security forces in Jammu and Kashmir. The recovery of arms, ammunition, and other materials not only reflects the operational readiness of militants but also the pressing need for enhanced intelligence and security measures.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police have vowed to continue their relentless operations against militants to safeguard the region. “The brave efforts of our officers and personnel in facing such dangers head-on are commendable. We are committed to rooting out these threats and ensuring the safety and security of our citizens,” an official spokesperson said.
As security forces remain on high alert, the region braces for potential further encounters. The suspension of traffic on critical highways indicates the seriousness of the threat and the comprehensive measures being taken to counteract militant activities.
The near-miss involving top police officials in Kathua serves as a stark reminder of the volatility in Jammu and Kashmir. As security forces press on with their operations, the community remains hopeful for a swift restoration of peace and normalcy. The discoveries made in the recent operation will undoubtedly aid in understanding and dismantling the networks that perpetuate violence in the region.
