Demanding Justice: Avtar Singh Murder Case Sparks Community Outcry
In a poignant show of strength and resilience, the family of a 39-year-old man, tragically killed in a land dispute, gathered today in Gangyal to demand justice for Avtar Singh, a beloved father of four whose life was cut short in a harrowing act of violence in Greater Kailash.
The demonstrators, including grieving family members and community leaders, rallied against the suspects implicated in Avtar Singh’s murder, notably pointing fingers at the notorious land grabber Ravinder Gupta, alias Gola Shah. Gupta, who was swiftly detained following the incident, now faces charges under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA), raising concerns among the victim’s family.
“We fear that Gupta’s detention under the PSA could undermine the pursuit of justice,” expressed S. Manjit Singh, President of the Jatt Sabha, in a joint statement with Jatt Sabha Leaders, “There are suspicions of high-level interference to shield the accused from more severe legal consequences.”
Avtar Singh’s family, originally from Mago Wali in RS Pura, had sought a peaceful life by purchasing land in Greater Kailash. However, their dreams were shattered when Avtar Singh was brutally murdered by individuals linked to land grabbers with alleged ties to the police and revenue department.
“The complicity of law enforcement in this heinous crime is deeply troubling,” the joint statement emphasized. “We demand the arrest and prosecution of all involved parties, including police officials and revenue officers complicit in the murder.”
The demand for justice was underscored by calls for a CBI probe into the incident, highlighting the severity and complexity of the case. Protesters pointedly criticized the police’s role as “mute spectators” during the attack, accusing them of aiding the perpetrators’ escape rather than intervening to protect the victim.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Jammu-Samba-Kathua Range, Dr Sunil Gupta, along with SSP Jammu Dr Vinod Kumar, met with the protesters to reassure them of an impartial investigation through a dedicated Special Investigation Team (SIT).
“The stature of the accused will not influence the integrity of our inquiry,” Dr Gupta assured the grieving family and community members. “We are committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice for Avtar Singh’s family.”
In a bid to prevent future tragedies, Dr Gupta announced the implementation of land dispute registers in police stations to facilitate early intervention and resolution of potential conflicts.
Following these assurances and constructive dialogue facilitated by senior police officials, the protesters agreed to suspend their demonstration, albeit with an appeal to Lt Governor Manoj Sinha for swift intervention and oversight.
As the investigation unfolds and pressure mounts for accountability, Avtar Singh’s memory lives on as a symbol of resilience and determination in the face of adversity, resonating deeply with a community united in the pursuit of justice and closure.
