SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is reportedly treading cautiously over a proposed Cabinet reshuffle amid concerns about possible dissent and a potential rebellion among National Conference (NC) legislators.
According to political sources, no Cabinet reshuffle is expected in Jammu and Kashmir before October 31, indicating that the Chief Minister may be weighing the political implications of any changes to the Council of Ministers before taking a final call.
Sources suggest that Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary could be the only minister spared in the proposed exercise, while other members of the Cabinet may face removal as part of a possible restructuring. However, no official announcement has been made regarding the proposed changes.
Education Minister Sakina Itoo has also emerged as a possible candidate for removal from her portfolio, according to political speculation. The likelihood of such a move, however, remains unconfirmed.
Fear of Internal Dissent
The reported delay comes amid concerns that a reshuffle could trigger resentment among party legislators, particularly if some ministers are dropped or their portfolios are reassigned. Any perceived imbalance in the distribution of ministerial positions could create fresh challenges for the National Conference leadership.
Omar Abdullah is reportedly keen to avoid a situation in which Cabinet changes fuel discontent within the party or lead to a show of rebellion by disgruntled MLAs. Maintaining unity within the ruling party is therefore likely to remain a key consideration as discussions over a possible reshuffle continue.
With October 31 emerging as a key date in the current speculation, the Chief Minister is expected to proceed cautiously rather than rush into changes that could have wider political consequences.
For now, the reported reshuffle remains uncertain, with the final decision resting with the Chief Minister and the party leadership. Neither the possible removal of ministers nor the reported changes involving individual portfolios have been officially confirmed.
