New Delhi: The Centre is likely to undertake a significant reshuffle of Governors, with new appointments expected in as many as six states, according to sources.

Sources indicate that the Union government is actively considering changes in the Lok Bhavans of several states, with the exercise likely to include both fresh appointments and transfers of serving Governors / Lt Governors.

The proposed reshuffle could also see some Governors being moved from one state or Union Territory to another as part of the exercise. Sources said the final decisions are expected to be taken at the highest level and may be announced once the formal process is completed.

According to sources, a serving Union Cabinet Minister is also likely to be appointed as a Governor, although the identity of the minister has not been disclosed.

The possible reshuffle assumes significance as the Governors of Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka are currently among the longest-serving Governors in the country, adding to speculation over possible changes in some Lok Bhavans.

However, sources cautioned that the names of the states and individuals under consideration could change before the final announcement. The Centre is expected to assess administrative requirements, constitutional responsibilities and political considerations before finalising the appointments.

The reshuffle, if approved, could therefore involve a combination of new appointments, inter-state transfers and changes involving serving political executives, marking a significant overhaul of the Governor-level appointments across the country.
