Rohit, Virat And Bumrah Return As England Opt To Bat In First ODI Against India

England captain Harry Brook won the toss and elected to bat against India in the opening One-Day International at Edgbaston on Tuesday, as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah returned to India’s ODI setup.
England captain Harry Brook said he expected the surface to be best for batting early before offering assistance to the spinners later in the match.
Brook said England would carry the same adaptable approach from the T20 series into the 50-over format and hoped the side could improve on its inconsistent ODI record in recent years. England named two spinners and three frontline seamers, with fast bowler Josh Tongue making his ODI debut.
Wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler became only the second England player after former captain Eoin Morgan to reach the milestone of 200 ODI appearances. Left-arm spinner Liam Dawson also made his 50th international appearance across formats.
India captain Shubman Gill said he would have preferred to bowl first, adding that the conditions resembled those in South Africa more than those usually encountered in India.
Gill said the three-match series would give India an opportunity to blood players with limited ODI experience while benefiting from the return of experienced campaigners Rohit, Kohli, KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah. He also said he hoped to build on his successful Test performances in England.
India named four seamers, with all-rounder Shivam Dube joining Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar in the pace attack, while Axar Patel and Washington Sundar were selected as the spin options.
Teams:
India: Shubman Gill (captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Washington Sundar, KL Rahul (wicketkeeper), Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Gurnoor Brar, Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna.
England: Jacob Bethell, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook (captain), Jos Buttler (wicketkeeper), Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Jofra Archer, Liam Dawson, Josh Tongue, Adil Rashid.
