PM Modi Highlights Naga Community’s ‘Morung’ Education System, Praises Blend Of Tradition And Modern Learning

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded the efforts of the Naga community in preserving cultural heritage while promoting modern education during the 132nd edition of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat.
Addressing the nation, the Prime Minister highlighted how communities in Nagaland are integrating traditional knowledge systems with contemporary learning methods. He pointed to the evolution of the “Morung” system – an indigenous model of community-based education – as a notable example.
Traditionally, Morung served as a platform where elders imparted knowledge about history, culture, and life skills to younger generations through storytelling and shared experiences. PM Modi noted that this system has now adapted to modern needs, incorporating subjects like mathematics and science while retaining its cultural roots.
He said the approach combines education with storytelling, folk songs, and traditional games, helping children develop both academic understanding and practical life skills. This blend of tradition and modernity, he added, is fostering holistic development among students.
Praising the Naga community for its efforts, the Prime Minister said such initiatives demonstrate how cultural heritage can coexist with progress in education. He encouraged citizens across the country to identify and share similar innovative practices from their regions.
PM Modi emphasised that these grassroots efforts play a vital role in shaping future generations while preserving India’s diverse cultural legacy.
