PM Modi Launches Development Projects Worth Rs 4,570 Crore In Assam’s Kokrajhar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth over ₹4,570 crore in Kokrajhar in Assam, aimed at boosting infrastructure, connectivity and economic growth in the Bodoland region.
Addressing a public gathering via video conferencing from Guwahati due to inclement weather, the Prime Minister said the projects would accelerate development and strengthen connectivity in the region. He also apologised for not being able to attend the event in person.
PM Modi paid tribute to prominent Bodo leaders Upendranath Brahma and Roopnath Brahma, and highlighted the rich cultural heritage of the Bodo community. He said Kokrajhar and the wider Bodoland region are closely associated with the vibrant traditions of the Bodo people.
“Kokrajhar is closely associated with the glorious Bodo culture. Traditions like Bathou and festivals such as Baisagu strengthen India’s cultural diversity,” the Prime Minister said.
Major infrastructure push
According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the projects include road, rail and infrastructure initiatives designed to improve connectivity and economic opportunities in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).
More than ₹1,100 crore has been allocated to strengthen the road network in the region under the Asom Mala initiative, which aims to improve road connectivity across Assam.
The Prime Minister also noted that new transport projects will help improve trade, tourism and logistics, enabling farmers and businesses to access larger markets more easily.
Focus on peace and development
PM Modi said the region, which had witnessed decades of unrest in the past, is now moving steadily towards peace and development following the Bodo Peace Accord.
“There was a time when the hills echoed with the sounds of violence. Today Bodoland has set out on the path of peace and development, and Assam is writing a new chapter of prosperity,” he said.
The Prime Minister added that the government has been implementing commitments made under the 2020 agreement, including a ₹1,500 crore development package, promotion of the Bodo language and initiatives to integrate former insurgents into mainstream society.
Strengthening connectivity and trade
Six key road projects were launched in the BTR region to strengthen local infrastructure, while efforts are also underway to enhance railway connectivity. Plans include setting up a railway workshop and improving station infrastructure in the region.
PM Modi said better connectivity, including improved rail links and train stoppages, would help transform Kokrajhar into an important regional trade hub.
Respect for Bodo traditions
The Prime Minister also emphasised that the government has worked to ensure national recognition for the traditions and beliefs of the Bodo community, including the traditional faith Bathou.
He said efforts are being made to preserve spiritual sites and promote the cultural identity of tribal communities.
The Prime Minister also praised the development initiatives undertaken by the Assam government under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and leaders from the Bodoland region.
Calling for faster progress in the state, PM Modi said that with the continued support of the people, the vision of a “Viksit Assam” would be realised.
