DODA: The decision of Doda Police to book an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) from within its own ranks marks a significant moment for internal accountability in Jammu and Kashmir’s policing system. The incident, which began with a complaint filed on 3 December 2025 by Anzar Majid Malik at Police Post DH Doda, alleged wrongful restraint and physical assault by Ghulam Ali, son of Mohd Maqbool Dar of Sadeeqabad Doda. What distinguishes this case from many others is the swift and transparent response of the police department itself.
Acting on the written complaint, the police immediately registered FIR No. 272/2025 at Police Station Doda under the relevant sections of criminal law. As the investigation progressed, it emerged that the accused individual was not a civilian but an active ASI in the Police Department. Instead of allowing institutional pressures or hierarchical ties to hinder progress, the department moved promptly to initiate the legal process, signalling a clear institutional stance: rank does not grant immunity.
Speaking to the our channel, SSP Doda Sandeep Mehta confirmed the registration of the FIR and further revealed that a departmental enquiry has also been initiated against the ASI, underscoring the force’s dual commitment to criminal accountability and internal disciplinary standards. His statement aligns with the department’s consistent stance that misconduct—irrespective of rank or position—will face thorough scrutiny. It sends a strong message internally—that misuse of authority will not be shielded by the uniform—and externally, to the citizens, that the police force recognizes the importance of trust and transparency. In regions where public confidence in law-enforcement agencies is often fragile, such actions can help bridge longstanding gaps between citizens and the institutions meant to serve them.
The larger significance of this case lies in its demonstration of a functioning zero-tolerance policy toward misconduct. Police departments across the country often struggle with allegations of bias or reluctance to act against their own personnel. By booking an officer strictly on the basis of evidence and complaint, Doda Police offer a reminder that true accountability begins at home. It repositions the force not merely as an institution of enforcement but as one that subjects its own members to the same legal standards expected of the public.
With the investigation still underway, the final outcome will ultimately rest on due legal process. However, the foundational step—treating the accused officer no differently from any other citizen facing serious allegations—sets an important precedent. It reinforces the principle that the legitimacy of policing depends not only on its ability to enforce the law but also on its willingness to uphold it internally, without fear or favour.
This incident thus stands as a testament to an evolving policing culture in Doda—one increasingly anchored in transparency, accountability, and a zero-tolerance approach to misconduct of any officer entrusted with public responsibility.
