JAMMU: In a historic moment for Jammu & Kashmir’s law enforcement and justice system, the Jammu & Kashmir Police were today felicitated for their outstanding role in successfully solving the first-ever case under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in the Union Territory.
The case, originating from Nagrota, involved the misappropriation of ₹2.39 crore. Through efficient investigation and legal action, police recovered and returned ₹1.53 crore to 22 victims — an achievement widely hailed as a milestone in victim restitution and crime resolution.

Prominent citizens from Nagrota and adjoining panchayats were also present, making the event a community celebration of justice and police service.
BNSS — A New Era in Justice Delivery:
The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which replaced the colonial-era Code of Criminal Procedure, aims to revolutionise criminal justice in India. Its core objectives include:
• Faster Investigations — Mandatory timelines for case completion to avoid delays.
• Victim-Centric Justice — Stronger rights and protections for victims, including restitution.
• Technology Integration — e-FIR registration, digital evidence management, and video trials.
• Transparency & Accountability — Streamlined processes to ensure justice is not only done but seen to be done.
The Nagrota case is a prime example of how BNSS provisions can be leveraged to deliver swift and meaningful justice.
Significance of the Case:
This case marks a first in the Union Territory — not only because it was investigated and prosecuted under BNSS but also because it showcased the possibility of returning substantial sums to victims in a short time frame.
• Restoring public trust in the justice system.
• Encouraging victim participation in legal proceedings.
• Strengthening police-community relations through transparency.
Residents of Nagrota and neighbouring panchayats lauded the police force’s efforts, calling the case “a testament to courage, integrity, and commitment.” Many saw it as proof that the new law can effectively protect citizens’ rights and hold wrongdoers accountable.
Today’s felicitation was not merely a ceremony but a symbolic moment marking the dawn of a more people-centric justice system in J&K. By combining technology, legal reform, and dedicated policing, the BNSS framework promises to make justice swifter, fairer, and more accessible — ensuring that the law serves not just the process, but the people it was meant to protect.
