Jammu :In a decisive move to strengthen student safety during transit, the Transport Department of Jammu & Kashmir has issued a final warning to all school authorities to ensure mandatory installation of CCTV cameras in school buses by March 31, 2025. The department has made it clear that strict action under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 will be taken against defaulters from April 1, 2025 onwards.
The initiative, aimed at ensuring the safety and security of school children, was initially directed to be implemented by January 31, 2025. However, following a request from the Forum of Unaided Recognized Institutions (FOURI), the deadline was extended to March 31, 2025. Despite the extension, many schools have reportedly failed to comply.
No More Extensions — Stern Action from April 1st:
Transport Commissioner Visheshpaul Mahajan has directed all enforcement agencies to launch special drives from April 1, 2025, to inspect school buses across the region. Strict action will be taken against erring schools as per the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, including suspension of vehicle permits and other penalties.
“The safety of children is non-negotiable. Schools must adhere to the guidelines without any further delay, failing which strict action will follow,” said Visheshpaul Mahajan.
Enforcement Drives in Full Swing:
Regional Transport Officer Jammu Jasmeet Singh has also been instructed to submit weekly action-taken reports on the compliance status. Special teams will be deployed to verify the installation of CCTV cameras in all school buses, and violators will be dealt with as per the law.
Key Directives:
• All school buses must have functional CCTV cameras by March 31, 2025.
• Special drives will begin from April 1, 2025 to ensure compliance.
• Schools failing to comply will face strict penalties.
• Weekly reports to be submitted to the Transport Commissioner’s office.
Safety First:
The installation of CCTV cameras is a crucial step toward ensuring student safety, preventing misconduct, and holding school authorities accountable. Parents are encouraged to report any non-compliance to the Transport Department.
