Jammu : Residents of Ward 14 – Bhagwati Nagar are grappling with severe health and security issues due to the unauthorized operation of a sweet-making factory within their residential area. A formal complaint (JMC2025COMP001357) has been registered with the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), but as of now, no concrete action has been taken. The situation has sparked frustration among locals, who are demanding immediate intervention from authorities.
Public Health at Risk Due to Poor Hygiene:
According to residents, a Bikaner Sweets workshop has been illegally operating from a residential building, manufacturing sweets without proper licenses from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Locals have shared pictures that reveal the unsanitary conditions under which sweets are being produced, posing a direct threat to public health.
The factory is disposing of food waste irresponsibly, leading to a foul stench and an increase in rodent infestations. Residents fear that if authorities do not intervene, the area could soon face a larger sanitation crisis, increasing the risk of disease outbreaks.
A senior resident of Bhagwati Nagar, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed concerns:
“We have young children and elderly people in our homes. The foul smell and unhygienic conditions are unbearable. Why is this illegal factory still operating in our neighborhood?”
Traffic Chaos and Public Safety Concerns:
Beyond the public health risk, the illegal commercial activity has also disrupted daily life in the locality. Residents report that food trucks and supply vans frequently block roads, causing congestion and hindering emergency access.
Adding to their woes, locals allege that unknown individuals linked to the business intimidate and threaten residents. Reports indicate that some of the workers are often drunk and engage in illegal activities, raising serious security concerns. With a rise in theft incidents and unidentified vehicles parked in the area, many senior citizens feel unsafe stepping out after dark.
One of the biggest concerns is the unauthorized use of a public lane near Dr. Sushil Razdan’s clinic for parking causing inconvenience to the patients which is blocking the drainage system and causing waterlogging issues.
A concerned citizen stated:
“This is not just about one factory; this is about law and order. Who are these people coming into our area? Why are the authorities ignoring our complaints? The safety of our families is at risk.”
JMC’s Inaction Raises Questions:
The residents had high hopes when they filed an official complaint on the JMC online portal. The case was assigned to Hardeep Singh (Complaint Resolver – Level 1), but as of now, no action has been taken. This has left many wondering whether the JMC online grievance system is merely a formality with no real impact.
“If illegal businesses can operate freely despite complaints, what does this say about governance? Will the authorities take action, or will this be brushed under the carpet?” asked a frustrated resident.
The people of Bhagwati Nagar are now urging the JMC, Food Safety Department, and law enforcement agencies to take immediate action against the illegal operations before the situation worsens further.
The Big Questions That Authorities Must Answer
1. How is a sweet-making factory operating in a residential area without proper FSSAI certification?
2. Why have JMC officials failed to take action despite complaints and photographic evidence?
3. Who is responsible for the security risks posed by unknown individuals frequenting the area?
4. When will residents see accountability and enforcement from the concerned departments?
As health risks escalate, security concerns grow, and local frustration mounts, all eyes are now on the JMC and other authorities to see whether they will take swift action or ignore the plight of Bhagwati Nagar residents.
The residents quotes, stronger questions for accountability, and a sharper focus on public health, safety, and administrative failure.
