DELHI: In a historic political shift, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a decisive victory in the 2025 Delhi Legislative Assembly elections, marking its return to power in the national capital after 27 years. The party won 48 out of 70 seats, comfortably surpassing the majority mark of 36, while the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) managed to secure 22 seats. This landslide win has reaffirmed the BJP’s dominance in Indian politics and signals a major shift in governance for Delhi.
Following the victory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his gratitude to the people of Delhi on X (formerly Twitter). He declared that “Jana Shakti is paramount!” and emphasized that development and good governance had triumphed. Modi also assured the electorate that the BJP would leave no stone unturned in improving the quality of life in Delhi and ensuring the city’s key role in building a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India). His message reflected the party’s long-standing commitment to infrastructure, governance, and national integration.
The BJP’s campaign strategy was a major factor in this victory. Led by Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the party focused on themes of development, nationalism, and governance. Modi’s personal involvement in rallies and direct outreach to Delhi’s electorate created a strong connection with voters. The BJP also effectively mobilized its voter base through targeted social media campaigns, grassroots outreach, and extensive use of digital platforms to counter its opponents’ narratives. Female voter participation played a crucial role in the election, with many supporting the BJP due to its emphasis on safety, infrastructure, and welfare schemes.
The AAP, which had governed Delhi for a decade, suffered a major setback. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal lost his own seat in the New Delhi constituency to BJP leader Parvesh Verma, a result that symbolized the public’s dissatisfaction with AAP’s governance. The party faced multiple challenges, including corruption allegations, internal dissent, and a declining support base. The arrest of key AAP leaders on corruption charges just months before the elections significantly damaged its credibility. Voters who had previously backed AAP for its anti-corruption stance and focus on education and healthcare appeared disillusioned with the party’s trajectory.
The BJP’s return to power in Delhi signals a shift in the city’s governance model. The party has pledged to prioritize large-scale infrastructure projects, improve public transportation, tackle pollution, and integrate Delhi into the broader national development framework. However, challenges remain. Delhi’s urban infrastructure is under significant strain, and air pollution continues to be a pressing concern. The BJP will have to deliver on its promises while maintaining stability and public confidence.
The 2025 Delhi elections have not only reshaped the city’s political landscape but have also set the stage for national politics in the coming years. The BJP’s triumph reinforces its position as the dominant political force in India, while the AAP faces an existential crisis. With Delhi now under BJP’s rule, all eyes will be on how the new government implements its vision and fulfills the expectations of its electorate. The next few years will determine whether this historic mandate translates into lasting change for the people of Delhi.
