Sunil Gavaskar Criticizes Mohammed Siraj for Fiery Send-Off to Travis Head: “Unnecessary Display of Emotion”
Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj faced criticism from former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar for his fiery send-off to Australian batter Travis Head, who scored a brilliant 140 on Day 2 of the second Test at Adelaide Oval. Gavaskar, speaking on Star Sports, described Siraj’s actions as “unnecessary” and stressed the need for grace in such moments, especially considering the context of Head’s outstanding knock.
“Unnecessary, if you ask me. The man’s got 140, not one or two. You don’t give a send-off to someone who’s batted brilliantly and won the crowd over. Instead of becoming a hero for dismissing him, Siraj has become the villain,” Gavaskar said. He pointed out that a more respectful reaction would have earned Siraj admiration, even from the Adelaide crowd.
Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden also weighed in, acknowledging the emotions running high but emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship. “Siraj bowled his heart out, and it’s understandable he was passionate. But against a local hero like Head, who played a masterclass innings, showing humility would have been the wiser choice,” Hayden remarked.
Travis Head’s explosive knock, featuring 17 fours and four sixes, was the backbone of Australia’s total of 337. Despite the controversy, Siraj put in an impressive performance, claiming four wickets for 98 runs, with Jasprit Bumrah also excelling with figures of 4-61.
While Siraj’s spell showcased his intensity as a bowler, the fiery send-off highlighted the thin line between passion and sportsmanship on the big stage.
