JAMMU: The persistent debate over Article 370—its abrogation and possible restoration—has transformed into a futile exercise, failing to benefit anyone, including those advocating its reinstatement with constitutional guarantees. While democratic systems encourage robust debate, a discussion yielding no tangible outcome warrants reconsideration. Prolonging this narrative has become a significant roadblock in addressing the pressing issues of the two regions of Jammu and Kashmir, where voters have consistently demanded solutions to their grievances over decades.
At the heart of this debate lies an undeniable truth: the abrogation of Article 370, enacted on August 5, 2019, was the result of a decisive parliamentary mandate, widely accepted across India. By acknowledging this, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah himself has admitted that restoring Article 370 is implausible under the current regime. His candid acknowledgment underscores the reality that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have firmly aligned the national polity against any reversal of the move.
The abrogation’s passage through Parliament with an overwhelming majority reflected not just the legislative intent but also the sentiment of a nation seeking unity and progression. As time elapsed, the abrogation became an accepted reality for most Indians—a development viewed as both natural and irreversible.
A Legal Pursuit Meets a Definitive Judgment:
Political parties like the National Conference (NC), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and People’s Conference sought redress in the Supreme Court of India, challenging the constitutionality of Article 370’s abrogation. After extensive hearings and nationwide scrutiny, the apex court upheld Parliament’s action, rendering a final verdict on the matter. Despite this, the political discourse in Kashmir continues to echo calls for restoration, creating a perpetual cycle of rhetoric that overshadows urgent governance issues.
For the NC, its recent electoral victory in Kashmir Assembly elections has been interpreted by some as a rejection of Article 370’s abrogation. However, a closer analysis reveals a nuanced mandate. The electorate, while voicing discontent, also expressed a desire for sustained peace—a hard-earned reality after decades of turmoil marked by loss of life and mass displacements.
The Omar Abdullah-led administration now stands at a critical juncture. Having rallied voters with promises of improved quality of life, the focus must shift to fulfilling these assurances. Core issues such as employment generation, improved infrastructure, access to basic amenities, and fostering social harmony are the immediate demands of the people.
The prolonged debate on Article 370 risks becoming a distraction—a workshop for idlers seeking to derail developmental agendas. For the government to succeed, it must decisively pivot towards actionable governance, ensuring that its promises translate into tangible outcomes for the masses.
The Road Ahead: Delivering on People’s Welfare:
As the resolution on Article 370 languishes in political limbo, likely to be met with official rejection from the Centre, the Abdullah government has an opportunity to redefine its legacy. By relegating the debate to the annals of history and focusing on governance, the administration can carve a path toward progress.
For the people of Jammu and Kashmir, the expectation is clear: a government that prioritizes their well-being over divisive rhetoric. It is time to deliver on promises, bridge regional disparities, and create an environment where aspirations take precedence over anxieties.
The future of the region hinges on decisive leadership and a commitment to addressing the pressing challenges at hand. The debate on Article 370 has run its course; now, it’s time for the Abdullah administration to rise to the occasion and fulfill its mandate for change.
