Srinagar: In a bold and historic move, the Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly on Wednesday passed a resolution urging the Central Government to restore the region’s special status and initiate a dialogue with its elected representatives. The resolution, passed by a voice vote, stirred a political storm within the House, leading to heated protests from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs.
The resolution was introduced by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Singh Choudhary, a member of the National Conference, who took a decisive step in line with his party’s election manifesto. The National Conference had pledged to work towards restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, a commitment that resonates deeply with the region’s identity, culture, and rights. “This resolution is not just a political statement,” Choudhary asserted in his address to the assembly, “it is a commitment to honor and protect the unique identity of Jammu and Kashmir, which was stripped unilaterally. It’s time to listen to the people and ensure their rights are safeguarded.”
Choudhary’s statement highlighted the purpose of the resolution, which sought to reestablish the constitutional guarantees that once safeguarded the people of Jammu and Kashmir. “The removal of our special status,” Choudhary continued, “not only weakened our constitutional autonomy but also disrupted the socio-cultural fabric that our people hold dear. We urge the Centre to act in the spirit of democracy by holding a dialogue with our elected representatives.”
The BJP MLAs, however, were quick to express their dissent, storming into the well of the house and vocally opposing the resolution. Slogans of “National Conference sharam karo” (National Conference, have some shame) and “Pakistani agenda nahi chalega” (Pakistan’s agenda will not succeed) echoed throughout the assembly hall as they protested the move, alleging that the National Conference was pushing an agenda that could harm national integrity.
The speaker attempted to bring order to the session, but the relentless opposition from BJP members made it difficult to proceed smoothly. Despite the uproar, the Speaker confirmed the resolution’s passage through a voice vote, marking a significant moment in the legislative history of Jammu and Kashmir.
The passing of this resolution adds a new layer to the ongoing political discourse in the region. It reflects the growing demand among local leaders for a more inclusive approach from the Centre, which would respect the sentiments of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. As tensions mounted, the Speaker was compelled to adjourn the House, but not before the resolution left a lasting impact, igniting a nationwide debate over Jammu and Kashmir’s future.
The resolution’s passage is expected to increase pressure on the Central Government to reconsider its stance on Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and engage in meaningful dialogue with the region’s representatives. While the BJP remains staunchly opposed, the call for restoration of special status resonates with a section of the populace that views it as essential for preserving their cultural identity and political autonomy.
Political analysts believe that this resolution, though symbolic, could serve as a catalyst for renewed dialogue between the Centre and the leaders of Jammu and Kashmir.
