Jammu: As Jammu and Kashmir braces for its 2024 Assembly elections, the region is witnessing a political contest that has grown far more unpredictable and intense than any in recent memory. The oft-repeated notion that “the route to power flows through Jammu” seems more than just electoral rhetoric this time, as both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress fight tooth and nail for dominance in the Jammu region, while dealing with shifting political dynamics in Kashmir.
Political analysts suggest that the Jammu division, long seen as the BJP’s stronghold, could hold the key to power in J&K’s next legislative assembly. However, the ground reality for both the BJP and Congress-National Conference (NC) alliance is proving far more complicated than anticipated.
In the Kashmir Valley, unpredictability is the norm, but this time, it’s Jammu that’s sending ripples of uncertainty through political corridors. Traditionally a BJP bastion, the Jammu region is now witnessing fierce multi-cornered contests across several districts, with Congress, the NC, and regional parties like the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) and J&K Apni Party entering the fray. Phase after phase of polling is revealing that the BJP cannot rest on its laurels, as it faces strong anti-incumbency sentiments and challenges from both traditional rivals and independent candidates.
A Pitched Battle in Jammu:
Jammu’s assembly constituencies have become the centerpiece of political calculation, with Rajouri, Poonch, Reasi, and Udhampur districts being critical battlegrounds where BJP and Congress are key contenders. Even in the Chenab Valley – comprising Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban – the BJP faces tough competition from the Congress-NC alliance. While independent candidates and smaller parties may pull off surprises in some seats, the real struggle lies between the BJP and Congress, each desperately trying to sway voters.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have tirelessly campaigned, emphasizing the significance of these elections not just for J&K but for the future of BJP’s narrative of “Naya Jammu and Kashmir,” post-Article 370. However, this rhetoric faces a stiff test, as anti-incumbency waves sweep through Jammu, with voters questioning the BJP’s record in the last decade. The BJP’s aggressive campaign tactics and “Mission 50” goal signal that the party is well aware of the tough battle ahead, where every vote counts and no constituency is guaranteed.
Congress Eyes a Resurgence – But Faces Its Own Challenges:
On the other hand, Congress is hoping to ride the wave of anti-incumbency and reclaim its lost political ground. Its alliance with the National Conference is seen as a strategy to strengthen its vote bank and challenge the BJP. Yet, Congress faces its own hurdles, especially in Jammu’s Hindu-dominated areas, where NC’s promises of restoring Article 370 and 35-A and repealing the Public Safety Act (PSA) could alienate voters. Additionally, the endorsement of the Congress-NC alliance by Pakistan’s Defence Minister has stirred doubts among the electorate, leading to whispers of distrust in Congress’s agenda.
A senior Congress leader, while acknowledging these challenges, remains confident that the party will overcome them. “Our AICC president, during his recent press conference in Jammu, made it clear that Congress has a separate agenda, and we will form a Common Minimum Programme (CMP) with NC after coming to power. We are committed to standing by our own agenda,” he stated.
Silent Majority – The Deciding Factor?
Yet, the true concern for both the BJP and Congress may lie with the “silent majority,” whose sentiments remain largely hidden. Political analysts suggest that this silent bloc could determine the fate of both parties, especially given the strong undercurrents of anti-incumbency across the Jammu region. Overconfidence in their respective electoral bases could prove disastrous for both the BJP and Congress if they fail to secure the crucial support of these undecided voters.
Moreover, the BJP is contending with internal divisions in several constituencies, where a “BJP vs. BJP” scenario has emerged, threatening to split the party’s vote share. This internal strife has raised alarm within the BJP, further complicating its electoral prospects.
Omar Abdullah Sounds the Alarm for Congress:
Adding to Congress’s anxiety, National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah voiced his concerns over the party’s lackluster campaign in Jammu. In a recent statement, he urged Congress leadership to focus its efforts on Jammu, noting, “What Congress does in Jammu is what counts. Unfortunately, the Congress has not done as much in the plains of Jammu as the NC expects it to do. The lion’s share of the seats in Jammu went to Congress, yet its campaign is still low-key.”
Responding to Abdullah’s concerns, Congress scheduled high-profile rallies in Jammu, featuring Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. However, inclement weather disrupted these plans, and further adjustments to the campaign strategy are now underway.
What Lies Ahead?
As the campaign enters its final phase, all eyes are on the polling booths. Jammu, long seen as a fortress for the BJP, now shows signs of vulnerability, while Congress, despite its resurgent energy, faces a difficult balancing act between appeasing NC supporters and not alienating its core Hindu vote base. The political landscape remains volatile, and with the silent majority yet to speak, the fate of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections 2024 hangs in the balance.
In a region as politically charged as J&K, one thing is certain: this election is far from a mere contest of words – it’s a battle for the future of the region, and Jammu is at its epicenter.
