In the lead-up to the Paris Olympics 2024, the newly appointed Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, held a review meeting on Thursday in New Delhi to discuss Indiaโ€™s preparations. This marked the first meeting between the Sports Minister and the President of the India Olympic Association (IOA), PT Usha. Several key figures attended the meeting, including Sports Secretary Sujata Chaturvedi, Director General of the Sports Authority of India Sandip Pradhan, and Minister of State for Sports Raksha Khandse. Following her discussion with Mansukh Mandaviya, PT Usha said, โ€œI am delighted that they are keen to learn about the IOA and our preparations for Paris. We will maintain regular contact and aim to have weekly meetings.โ€ The Paris Olympics are scheduled to take place from July 26 to August 11. India will try to outdo their all-time best tally of seven medals, including a gold, which they achieved in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In the Paralympics, India will try break its record of 19 medals, including five golds, set at the 2020 Tokyo edition.

In a historic achievement for Indian equestrian sports, Shruti Vora, astride Magnanimous, has become the first Indian rider to win a three-star Grand Prix event. Shruti scored 67.761 points in the CDI-3 event held in Lipica, Slovenia, from June 7 to 9. The Indian finished ahead of Moldovaโ€™s Tatiana Antonenco (Aachen), who scored 66.522. Austriaโ€™s Juliane Jerich (Quarter Girl) completed the top three with a score of 66.087. โ€œThis is great news for the Indian equestrian fraternity. This inspiring performance from Shruti has made the country proud. Many women are taking up the sport, and such milestones will inspire many more riders to strive for excellence,โ€ EFI Secretary General Col Jaiveer Singh said in a statement by the Equestrian Federation of India press release. Shruti also had a commendable show in the Grand Prix Special, which was held at the same venue simultaneously. She finished second behind the Antonenco-Aachen combo with a score of 66.085. โ€œI am extremely delighted with the result. I have worked hard, and the victory is indeed satisfying. The win has come in an Olympic year, and that makes it significant. The fact that I am the first rider from the country to win a three-star event makes it a special achievement. I will keep working hard to bring laurels for my country,โ€ Shruti Vora said. Hailing from Kolkata, Shruti has represented India in the Dressage World Championship (2022) and the Asian Games (2010, 2014).

Market sentiment was positive, with 2,123 shares advancing, 346 shares declining, and 107 shares remaining unchanged. Indiaโ€™s annual retail inflation eased to a 12-month low of 4.75% in May from 4.83% in April, government data showed on Wednesday. โ€œThere is good news on the inflation front, both in the US and in India,โ€ said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services. โ€œThe takeaway from the inflation numbers is that the disinflation process is well on track. From the market perspective, this is positive news, particularly for banking stocks.โ€ Strong buying by both foreign and domestic institutional buyers also supported the stock markets. Leading the gains on the Nifty were Nestle, Divis Labs, HDFC Life, Shriram Finance, and LTIMindtree. On the downside, HUL, Britannia, Tata Consumer, and ICICI Bank were among the major losers. By 10:28 AM, the Sensex had moderated its gain to 218 points, and the Nifty was up by 63 points.
